Navigating the wonderful world of weddings can be overwhelming, and it can often be difficult to know where to start when it comes to choosing a photographer. Particularly, when choosing between film photography and digital photography. Today we’ll be explaining the differences between the two, so that you can find out which one is the perfect fit for you. Unless you’re extremely clued up on photography, it’s almost impossible to understand the difference between film and digital. Many photographers’ individual style will lean towards one or the other, while others will dabble between both, but it’s important that you establish which one you feel suits your personal taste and wedding style.

A lot of it comes down to the lighting conditions. Film photography is renowned for working well with brighter lighting and highlights, particularly in comparison to digital photography. For instance, if you’re lucky enough to be graced with glorious sunshine on your wedding day, film photography will still be able to capture the detail and colour in the background. On the other hand, digital photography is known for working beautifully with lower lighting conditions – such as when the sun is down or in candlelight. For this reason, you need to consider your venue and its setting. Does it get a lot of natural light? Will you be having outdoors shots? Do you want any photographs when the sun is setting? Film and digital are both suited to different moments throughout your wedding day.

Film photography captures a softness and romance, with a high quality of light that gives it that ‘fine art’ almost luxury feel. Whereas digital photography is generally a reflection of the individual photographer’s technique, as each image is edited using filters to create a signature style. They also have a sharper finish, as opposed to the softer feel of film photography.

Due to its exceptional quality, film photography is generally the more expensive option. If you hire a film photographer, chances are, you will receive fewer images than you would if you hired a digital photographer. This is because as a film photographer, each individual image counts whereas with a digital photographer can shoot more freely, capturing thousands of images on the day. With digital photography, you’re more likely to get ‘off-the-cuff’ images of guests chatting and mingling, whereas each shot with film photography is carefully considered. While digital photography may cost less to develop, it can often take longer to process and edit the individual image as many more shots have been captured. So, although film photography can be costly in terms of materials, digital photography can cost more when it comes to time.
